Risk control
Comment on "Hopes 'slim' for 181 trapped miners" (China Daily, August 20)
This disaster could and should have been avoided. Related authorities and
enterprises should establish regulations to prevent such disasters, such
as suspending mining during rainstorms.
We hope that a risk control mechanism can be implemented and bless those
trapped workers and their families.

Just lawyers
Comment on "Japanese lawyers back slave laborers" (China Daily, August 20)
It is good some Japanese lawyers are standing up for justice and humanity.
However, the Japanese government should also face up to historical
problems with a more sincere attitude.

Don't blame RMB
Some US Democrats are pathetic. They pander to the American lower-middle
class for votes by falsely claiming that the renminbi is causing
Americans to lose their jobs.
Even if the RMB doubles in value, manufacturing jobs will simply move out
from China to less developed countries. They will not go back to the US.

English vs Chinese
Comment on "English invades Chinese language"(China Daily website, August
19)
The word "invade" in the title is not proper. To invade means to attack
or to take control of. English cannot control Chinese.
If our country is to develop, the only way is to open up and to learn
from the technologies and experiences of other developed countries.
However, we must not abandon our Chinese culture.

Good sign
To meet standards set by International Olympics Committee, Beijing has
been conducting an exercise to test air quality by reducing the number of
vehicles on roads.
It is a good sign the government is trying out new methods to reduce air
pollution and ease traffic jams in the capital. But the question is will
the effort continue after the Games? Vehicle emissions affect the lives
of people. Let's hope this is not just another "face-saving project".
