Chinese Tutor - Like father, like son

Like father, like son

By Ye Jun (Beijing Weekend)
Updated: 2007-08-13 10:19

Father-and-son chefs Peter Lam and Wilson Lam have been in Beijing for
six years, before coming to Marco Polo Parkside Beijing a year ago to
prepare for the opening of 78, the hotel's Chinese restaurant named after
its doorplate, which opened on July 19.

"The most important thing in cooking is the taste, but presentation is
not to be neglected," said Wilson Lam, the son. "We follow authentic
Cantonese cooking, but we also create new dishes." The father and son duo
bring 60 years of combined cooking experience to the kitchen and try to
make dishes that come with good taste, and better looks.

That principle is well reflected in honey-glazed pork tenderloin, one of
their signature dishes. The grilled pork is usually served in slices on a
plate. But at 78, pork neck is grilled after ordering (taking 20
minutes), and served beautifully, by the table, and sliced on the spot.
The dish is also served with crispy sesame cakes, which have an opening
in the middle for pork stuffing.

Crispy fried chicken is a Cantonese classic. It is marinated well with
herbs such as ginseng and angelica, which are believed to replenish
energy. It is not deep-fried. Instead, they pour oil onto the chicken
until it is ready. The dish is crispy and tasty.

Herbs are also used in other dishes, like in herb flavored chicken soup
with fish, in which smashed fish is made into the shape of noodles.

Cantonese cuisine uses plenty of seafood, as in Conpoy-flavored seafood
soup, seafood tart, prawn dumplings, cuttlefish balls with spinach, and
baked fried rice with prawns, in which curry is used.

There are many options of simple and fresh dishes, such as the vegetable
dish of celery, lotus root and young lily bulbs, and also an extensive
Cantonese dim sum menu.

The restaurant is decorated in traditional Chinese style, but with
obvious modern characteristics. Second floor private rooms are well
designed. Average spending is 150-200 yuan excluding wine.

Location: 1/F Marco Polo Parkside Beijing, 78 Anli Lu, Asian Games
Village, Chaoyang District
Opening hours: 7am-noon, 11:30am-2:30pm, 2:30-5:30pm, 5:30-10:30pm
Tel: 010-5963-6688 Ext 6415

Hands up all those who've leapt around their apartments at some point
singing along to Avril Lavigne's "Complicated"? Come on now, lying is bad
for your karma, and you at the back, hands up now. Although Avril is not
a big international DJ with a name like a pharmaceutical product, she is
far more of a superstar than any one-hit nightclub wonder will ever be.
Her tunes are as hard to shake as a Rolex salesman on Nanjing Dong Lu,
she has meaningful lyrics, a juggernaut of PR and marketing support and,
most importantly, popular appeal. She's sold 25 million albums, garnered
eight Grammy nominations and even hit the top of the movie charts as a
Possum named Heather. She's undeniably huge and she's coming to Shanghai.

?

Now, no big star is an easy hire. I've seen the catering requests for Il
Divo, the pop-operatic-totty-quartet, and these guys are expensive
puppies to feed and pay. We've seen a few big names in Shanghai such as
Elton, sponsored by Budweiser, and Christina, sponsored by Chivas, but
what's so exciting about Avril, apart from the fact that she's Avril, is
that she's being brought over by a brand firmly established in Shanghai:
Solid Vodka.

?

Over my years in Shanghai I've seen Solid grow from a teeny tiny
plantling into a great big vodka forest. It's now one of the best selling
vodkas in Shanghai and a growing force in the rest of China. I did a
little calculation: based on my own annual vodka consumption, multiplied
by the 18 million people currently in Shanghai and, well...let's just say
that the number had a lot of zeros.

?

Other than the drunkenness, the effect this meteoric rise has had on the
average China drinker has been pretty huge. Solid started off with
parties in the summer of 2005, the Solid Summer Sessions. This series of
parties at the now-defunct VIP Room brought us local DJs, the Jazz du
Funk crew and a whole load of creativity. They were fun, local, and based
around the limited budget of a fledgling company. Within a year though,
Solid were bringing us big name DJs, like Bob Sinclar, Pete Tong and a
whole host of others all making it out to Shanghai for the first time,
purely for our partying pleasure. Not half bad before the brand had even
reached its second birthday, which it celebrated, in fine fettle, with a
gala Jean Georges dinner and a two-day extravaganza at Bar Rouge.

?

Not wanting the rest of the 22 other cities across China, in which Solid
Vodka is sold, to miss out, the team has spent July jetting across the
country for their second nationwide tour, Solid Science. From Harbin to
Nanning, twenty cities so far have enjoyed the Solid treatment.

?

With the DJ scene in China well and truly under their control, the gift
to Shanghai for Summer 2007 is the Avril gig. On Wednesday 15th August,
the Avril-naut will roll into town and over to the 6,000 seater Qizhong
stadium. Yes, you will be delighted to hear, that the concert will take
place in the beautiful new one used for the tennis and not the crappy
gymnasium that most pop stars inexplicably perform in. The show follows
the launch of her third hit album The Best Damn Thing and a sellout tour
of Europe and Asia. The Shanghai date will be her first and only in
Mainland China, and is expected to be jam packed full of punky dance
moves. She has even added a line in Mandarin to her top-selling song
Girlfriend, which recently hit the Number 1 spot in Mainland charts.

?

Solid and event organizers, Emma, have taken pains to give Avril's fans
access to the superstar, pricing 80% of the tickets at 200rmb or 400rmb,
and organizing free buses to the stadium. The event is on track to be a
sellout, so pick up your tickets sooner rather than later on Emma's
ticket hotline: 400-707-9999 or ticketing website: www.emma.cn.

?

For those who like their Avril with a drink in hand in a club, the
official after-party, sponsored by Solid Vodka, is at M2, the new venue
from the people behind Muse in Plaza 66. See, that wasn't complicated,
was it?

?

Date: August 15

The Bridget Jones star looked smitten as she shimmied up close to her
handsome partner.

Uptown Girl: smiley Renee grabs her date for a dance

Zellweger, 38, has been rumoured to be dating an agent at Hollywood firm
CAA - and onlookers speculated her man for the night was one and the same.

The pair were attending the outdoor Social@Ross concert in East Hampton,
New York, with other stars including Mary-Kate Olsen.

Zellweger spent part of the night with actor Alec Baldwin, before
grabbing her mystery man for Joel's encore of Piano Man.

Since her marriage to country singer Kenny Chesney was annulled in

Whoever her man was, he was certainly impressing the actress with his

of a series that opened with Prince and will finish with Tom Petty on 25
August.

Jennifer Aniston promoted to management

(E! Online)
Updated: 2007-08-06 16:04

Los Angeles - Jennifer Aniston is trading in her office space for the
open road.

The actress has signed on to star as a traveling saleswoman in the comedy
Management, which will mark the directing debut of The Laramie Project
scribe Stephen Belber, who also penned the film's screenplay.

According to Variety, Aniston's character sells cheap generic
art鈥攑ieces of flair, if you will鈥攖o nondescript businesses and
motels. Steve Zahn is set to play the slacker motel manager she has a
one-night stand with who ends up following her all over the country.

Although he was already an established playwright, things started falling
into place for Belber in Hollywood after he shopped his script for the
upcoming newscaster-talks-to-God flick The Power of Duff. Jamie Foxx is
attached to star. He has also collaborated on episodes of Rescue Me and
Law & Order:SVU.

In addition to The Laramie Project, which dealt with the aftermath of the
murder of University of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard and was later
made into an HBO film, Belber wrote the stage drama Tape, which
dialogue-happy Richard Linklater adapted for the big screen in 2001 with
a cast consisting entirely of Ethan Hawke, Robert Sean Leonard and Uma
Thurman.

Zahn can currently be seen in theaters costarring as an escaped POW in
the Werner Herzog nail-biter Rescue Dawn with Christian Bale. Up next for
the 39-year-old character actor is the comedy Strange Wilderness, in
theaters next January, about a few animal lovers who head to the Andes in
search of Bigfoot. Zahn will also appear in the CBS miniseries Comanche
Moon, based on the Larry McMurtry novel.

As for Aniston, her last cinematic romp, 2006's The Break-Up, was a big
hit at the box office but may have ended up hitting a little too close to
home. It's unlikely that the actress will find much art reflecting life
in the upcoming slate of projects she's reportedly attached to, however,
which includes the prison-break thriller Wanted, The Senator's Wife and
the Coen Brothers caper Gambit.

Earlier this year, Aniston returned to prime-time for the first time
since Friends ended in 2004, to play a rival editor to Courteney Cox's
tabloid-dish diva on FX's Dirt.

The 38-year-old Emmy winner will also executive-produce, and possibly
star in, the period musical Goree Girls, a true story about eight women
locked up in a Texas penitentiary in the 1940s who form one of the
first-ever all-female country-western groups.

New mum Jordan?showed her cheeky side and bumps into old flame Gareth

(Daily Mail)
Updated: 2007-08-04 11:16

It must have been an interesting few minutes in the VIP section of London
club Movida last night, when glamour model Jordan ran into old flame
Gareth Gates.

The Pop Idol star, who famously lost his virginity to the party girl,
came face to face with her at the hotspot before making a quick exit.

Yellow fever: Jordan (and pal Michelle Heaton) hit London club Modiva for
a wild girls night

Five weeks after giving birth to her daughter Princess Tiaamii, Jordan
resurrected her old party girl ways during a the wild night out.

She stepped out in a thigh-skimming canary yellow dress that didn't leave
much to the imagination and quickly revived her infamous Jordan antics,
playing up to waiting photographers with provocative poses as she
stumbled out of the club at 2am.

Ex factor: Gareth Gates escaped the club 15 minutes after Katie Price's
arrival

She was joined by former Liberty X singer Michelle Heaton and a group of
female friends, who started off the night at the Sanderson hotel.

Jordan 鈥 who was not wearing her wedding ring 鈥 left husband Peter
Andre behind for the the night out.

Call it a night: the model eventually headed home at 2am He avoided the
potentially awkward situation of also encountering Gates.

Jordan showed her cheeky side

At 17, the Pop Idol winner had brief relationship with Jordan when she
was six months pregnant with her first child.

He initially denied the liaison to the press but eventually admitted they
were together for three months.

Meanwhile, Jordan appears to have quickly regained her pre-pregnancy
figure, but denies it's through crash dieting.

She told OK! Magazine: 鈥淚 honestly don't know why. I'm so busy looking
after the kids I forget to eat lunch because I'm just not feeling that
hungry.

She added: 鈥淚 should have a great body soon because I've lost nearly
all the weight, then I'm going to get my boobs done in December.鈥

She also plans to add more children to her brood, which also includes
2-year-old Junior and four-year-old son Harvey, by footballer Dwight
Yorke.

Following the birth of Princess Tiaamii, she said: "After it was over I
thought, I want another one straight away! A little girl called Twinkle."

Swedish Post honours Bergman with new stamp

Updated: 2007-08-02 19:50

STOCKHOLM?- The Swedish Post said Thursday it will release a new stamp to
honour Swedish film-maker Ingmar Bergman, who died earlier this week at
the age of 89.

"Our aim is to show Ingmar Bergman in his role as a film director,"
spokesman Thorsten Sandberg told AFP.

He said the final selection of the design, which is due out in January,
was not yet decided.

"We were looking forward to honouring Ingmar Bergman's 90th birthday next
year and we were planning to release a new stamp edition, but now we will
release a memorial edition instead," Sandberg said.

The Swedish postal services had previously released stamps related to
Bergman's movies such as Cries and Whispers, and Wild Strawberries.

Chinese Tutor - Walk away the summer heat

? ?

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Walk away the summer heat

(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2007-08-01 10:25

In summer, Chinese people tend to take short walks after dinner when the
hot weather cools down. This after-dinner walk not only allows people to
enjoy the relaxing breeze in the evening, but also helps with digestion
and promotes body health. As the Chinese saying goes, if you take a walk
of 100 steps everyday after dinner, you will be able to live to 100 years
old. So let's take a stroll together to drive summer heat away and to
embrace a healthy lifestyle. Here's a list of places ideal for
after-dinner walks.

?

University Campuses

?

University campuses, full of young enthusiasm, academic seriousness and
quiet atmosphere rarely found in metropolitan areas, are always the top
choice for an after-dinner stroll.

?

In Beijing, there is the famous college area in Haidian district, which
houses Peking University known for its long academic history, Tsinghua
University integrating cutting-edge modern architecture with archaic
ones, as well as Beijing Language and Culture University which apparently
hosts the largest number of overseas students among all universities in
the capital.

?

Shanghai may not have such a concentrated area of universities, and with
the various campuses spread throughout the city, more Shanghainese will
have access to them. There are three nice campuses to walk around in:
Shanghai International Studies University which has a European
atmosphere, Tongji University with its unique German origin and a long
history, and the famous Fudan University which has the title of "Peking
University in southern China".

?

Public Parks

?

If there is a park near where you live, then you are blessed. Make a good
use of this park and take a walk there with your loved ones. If you don't
have a park nearby, then take some time to find a park and spend some
time there. The benefits will surely make your time worthwhile. Here are
some suggestions of parks to visit in Beijing and Shanghai:

?

Beijing

Yuandadu Park
As its name "Yuandadu" suggests, this park houses relics from the capital
city during the Yuan Dynasty. It boasts a small creek lined by
distinctive bars. So the night scene there is fun and beautiful.

?

Location: 200 meters south to University of International Business and
Economics, No.12, Huixin Dongjie, Chaoyang District

Beihai Park

Nicknamed "lovers' park", Beihai Park is full of couples in love during
the evenings. Here people can enjoy the old Beijing flavor while walking
in beautiful scenery.

Location: No.1 Wenjinjie
Tel: 010-64033225

Scarlett Johansson

Hollywood beauty Scarlett Johansson has landed the lead role in the
X-rated biopic of the world's biggest porn star.

The 22-year-old was personally picked by Jenna Jameson to chart her
transformation from ballet dancer to stripper, before making it big in
the adult film industry.

Jameson says of her casting, "I tapped up Scarlett for the part and I'm
very excited about the film.

"It was my decision not to play the role because I've lived that tale
already and anyone can play themselves."

The movie will be based on Jameson's best-selling autobiography, How to
Make Love Like a Porn Star.

Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie Simpson make a 'yellow' carpet
appearance to mark their cinematic debut July 26, 2007.[AP]

Woo Hoo! "The Simpsons Movie" turned doughnuts into dollars over the
weekend, raking in $71.9 million to debut as the top movie this week.

The big screen tale of the lovable, if dysfunctional, family rolled over
the competition, sending last week's top movie, Universal Studio's "I Now
Pronounce You Chuck and Larry," into second place with $19 million, a 44
percent drop.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," from Warner Bros., fell to
third place with $17.1 million, a 48 percent drop from last week. The
film has grossed $242 million domestically after three weeks in theaters.

"Homer's odyssey paid off," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of
box-office tracker Media By Numbers.

The film, which featured the antics of yellow-hued Homer, Marge, Bart,
Lisa, Maggie and a host of motley characters, grossed an average of
$18,320 on 3,922 screens across the country and also opened strongly in
70 foreign markets.

"We are ecstatic," said Chris Aronson, senior vice president for
distribution at 20th Century Fox. "It far exceeded even the most
optimistic of expectations."

The hand-drawn movie had the fifth best opening weekend of the year,
beating such notable contenders as "Transformers," from Paramount, "Ghost
Rider," from Sony Pictures and the computer-animated "Ratatouille," from
The Walt Disney Co. and Pixar Animation Studios.

"It's unprecedented to have the longest-running sitcom of all time still
on the air and have it also be the number one movie in theaters,"
Dergarabedian said.

Dergarabedian praised the film's marketing campaign, which included
dressing a number of 7-Eleven stores around the country as Kwik-E-Marts,
the fictional convenience stores selling such Simpsons' favorites as Buzz
Cola and Squishees.

The debut was good news for Fox, which also has done well this year with
top-grossing films "Live Free or Die Hard" and "Fantastic Four: Rise of
the Silver Surfer."

The long-awaited film version of the Fox Television show played well
across the country and with all age brackets, Fox said Sunday, giving the
distributor hope that it will hold its own against next week's big
opener, "The Bourne Ultimatum," from Universal.

The stellar debut of "The Simpsons Movie" helped propel the summer box
office take. This week's top-12 films grossed $168.6 million, up a
whopping 45 percent from the top 12 last year, which included "Miami
Vice" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

The weekend's other debuts made the top 10, but lagged far behind "The
Simpsons Movie."

"No Reservations," the Warner Bros. romantic comedy starring Catherine
Zeta-Jones as a gourmet chef, earned $11.8 million.

"I Know Who Killed Me," a Sony Pictures/Tri-Star thriller starring
Lindsay Lohan, debuted in 9th place with a paltry $3.4 million.

"Who's Your Caddy," from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, grossed $2.9 million.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian
theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be
released Monday.

1. "The Simpsons Movie," $71.9 million.

2. "I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry," $19.1 million.

3. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," $17.1 million.

4. "Hairspray," $15.6 million.

5. "No Reservations," $11.8 million.

6. "Transformers," $11.5 million.

7. "Ratatouille," $7.2 million.

8. "Live Free or Die Hard," $5.4 million.

9. "I Know Who Killed Me," $3.4 million.

10. "Who's Your Caddy," $2.9 million.

Lohan goes from pretty kid to party girl

Lindsay Lohan poses in this November 2006 file photo in Los Angeles.[AP]

Hard to believe now, after all the arrests, car crashes and late-night
club hopping, that just 10 years ago Lindsay Lohan was Hollywood's
freshest-faced bundle of joy.

The actress, who was arrested Tuesday for investigation of drunken
driving and cocaine possession, was a freckle-faced, cute-as-a-button
11-year-old when she made her auspicious film debut in 1997 in the
venerable Disney comedy "The Parent Trap."

Now 21, Lohan looked anything but fresh-faced in the mug shot released by
the Santa Monica Police Department following her arrest. But 2007 has
been a troubled year for the actress whose latest film, "I Know Who
Killed Me," reaches theaters Friday.

Lohan has been in and out of rehab twice since the beginning of the year,
managing to wreck a Mercedes-Benz between visits to the Wonderland Center
in January and the Promises Malibu Alcohol and Drug Rehab Treatment
Facility in June.

The car crash, over Memorial Day weekend, also resulted in a
drunken-driving charge.

It wasn't always like this for Lohan, who once got much more attention
for her films than her visits to nightclubs and police stations.

"Little Lindsay Lohan, who plays the dual role made famous by Hayley
Mills in Walt Disney Pictures' remake of 'The Parent Trap,' is an
amazingly gifted child actress, a natural camera performer with lots of
smartness and sparkle," Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Wilmington
wrote of Lohan's debut.

Though few knew it at the time, Lohan was already a veteran, having
appeared in more than 60 TV commercials and the soap opera "Another
World" before "The Parent Trap," according to the biography on her
MySpace page.

She followed "The Parent Trap" with a few TV films and then another
theatrical hit with 2003's "Freaky Friday." But it was as Cady Heron,
the-good-kid-turned-mean-kid-turned-good again in 2004's "Mean Girls,"
that Lohan broke through to wider audiences.

It was also about this time that the tabloid headlines began crowding out
the movie reviews.

It started innocently enough, with a 2004 red-carpet dustup with fellow
teen star Hillary Duff over boy toy Aaron Carter. The world also began to
notice how the once-scrawny child star had developed into a voluptuous
woman partial to revealing outfits and wardrobe malfunctions, the photos
of which quickly found their way onto the Internet.

Her weight began to fluctuate dramatically, and Vanity Fair reported in
2006 that Lohan acknowledged to dabbling in drugs and having been
bulimic. The actress quickly issued a statement saying the magazine had
"misused and misconstrued" her remarks.

Lohan smashed up her first Mercedes in May 2005, telling police she was
fleeing a paparazzi photographer when she made a U-turn and collided with
him. She wrecked another in October of that year trying to flee as many
as 30 photographers who witnesses said surrounded her as she left a
boutique.

She also began making periodic visits to hospitals in 2005, being treated
at least once that year for exhaustion. She was hospitalized at least
twice in 2006, the first time in London for a cut on her leg and the
second time in the Miami area for an asthma attack.

Not everyone believed all of her physical problems were health related
鈥 Lohan, who didn't turn 21 until this month, has long been a fixture
on the Hollywood nightclub scene.

"We are well aware that your ongoing all-night heavy partying is the real
reason for your so-called 'exhaustion,'" James G. Robinson, head of
Morgan Creek Productions, said in a letter last year chastising the
actress for showing up late, if at all, to the set of the film "Georgia
Rule."

Her father, former futures trader Michael Lohan, has had his own problems
with the law. He was released from prison in March after serving nearly
two years for attempted assault and driving while intoxicated.

Despite her problems, Lohan has continued to work frequently until now,
both as an actress and singer with several albums to her credit.

"Lohan rises to the occasion, delivering a rock-the-house version of
'Frankie and Johnny,'" Rolling Stone critic Peter Travers said of her
singing in "A Prairie Home Companion."

Whether her latest run-in with the law will hurt her career remains to be
seen, said veteran publicist David Brokaw, although he noted both fans
and Hollywood moguls tend to be forgiving of celebrities if they clean up
their acts.

"Her young fans and the industry will embrace her," said Brokaw, who does
not represent Lohan. "But I think wondering about how people feel about
where she's at right now is secondary to can this young woman accept real
treatment and find a way to manage her behavior. She's right now in a
spiral of recklessness."

Rolling Stones donating share of Polish concert proceeds to bus crash fund

British rockers The Rolling Stones are going ahead with a concert in
Poland despite three days of national mourning for 26 pilgrims killed in
a coach accident in France, organisers said Monday.

While the group has decided not to call off the concert Wednesday
evening, which is expected to draw tens of thousands of fans to Warsaw,
victims' families will receive a share of the proceeds, concert promotion
firm Viva Art said in a statement.

The company did not specify the sum to be donated by the Rolling Stones
nor the concert's sponsors.

The event at a Warsaw race-track is part of the group's current European
tour, and is scheduled to begin only hours before the official end of
three days of mourning declared by Polish President Lech Kaczynski in the
wake of Sunday's deadly crash in the French Alps.

Mick Jagger and fellow band members will also ask the crowd to observe a
minute's silence during the event, organisers said.

Several performers have called off concerts scheduled to take place
during the mourning period, notably British star Rod Stewart, who
postponed an event scheduled for Tuesday in the historic shipyard in the
Baltic Sea city of Gdansk.

The pilgrims' coach crash in the French Alps has sent a shockwave across
Poland, where more than 90 percent of the 38.2 million people are Roman
Catholic.

The Polish-registered vehicle, carrying 48 pilgrims and two drivers back
from visiting a local Roman Catholic shrine, had brake trouble Sunday
morning as it drove down a steep and winding road between Gap and
Grenoble, officials said.

It smashed through the safety barrier, hurtling 40 metres (130 feet) onto
the banks of a river below and catching fire. Twenty-six people were
killed and 24 injured, 14 of them seriously.

CITYLIFE / Odds & Ends

Top ten charming Chinese towns (II)
(chinadaily.com.cn)
Updated: 2006-04-24 10:22

To big city dwellers, small towns always seem fascinating. Here are the
ten most charming towns in China chosen by CCTV from more than a hundred
candidates. The towns were selected on the merits of their natural
scenery, cultural heritage, local folk customs, and economic vigor. Each
of them is notable for something unique, such as the rivers and bridges
of Wuzhen, the castle retreat of Zhangbi, and the exotic boundary town
Shiwei which featured in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Want to know
more? Follow Citylife's guide to take a closer look.

6. Tongli, Jiangsu

Sometimes called the "Little Venice of the Orient", Tongli is surrounded
by lakes on all four sides. It boasts clear waters, many bridges and
gardens from the Ming and Qing dynasties, and is a perfect representation
of Confucian culture. The most famous gardens are Tuisiyuan - a garden
for meditation, with its a comprehensive complex of kiosks, viewing
platforms and kiosks; and Gengletang where the old weathered houses
provide a faithful record of the past. As well as walking through the old
Jiangnan lanes with flower-engraved doors and pebble tracks, you can take
a boat ride on the river (RMB 80 for one boat daytime/RMB 50-60 at
night). And don't miss zhuangyuanti - a local pigs' trotter dish.

Location: 10 km west of Zhouzhuang, 18 km from Suzhou

Tickets: RMB 35-80 depending on the season and how many spots you visit

How to get there:
Take Huqingping Road from Shanghai and continue through Qinpu, and take
Suhu Hongqiao Airport Road. Or take Huning Highway from Shanghai, and
take Sujia Road at Suzhou through Wujiang to get to Tongli (the whole
trip is 25km).

Comments on "Should Beida recruit more recommended students?" (China
Daily website, July 9)

It is unfair. Maybe the recommended students are more talented than the
exam-takers, but we should remember that the university entrance exam is
an effective way for people to get access to high-quality education. We
spare no effort to prepare for the exam, so we should all be treated
equally.

Zhumaomao

On China Daily website

The door to success is open to all and if you are outstanding you will
succeed no matter what.

The recommended students are always very diligent and have excellent
academic records, so it's quite understandable for PKU to want to enroll
more of them.

As we know, PKU enrolls students through recommendation not only from
itself, but also from other prestigious universities.

On the other hand, PKU and other prestigious universities still provide
opportunities for students through fair competition. No system is
perfect, so just be confident about yourself. If you are talented and
enterprising you will be selected by a top university eventually.

A fresh look

Comments on Li Xing's column "Rethinking the 'Made in China' label"
(China Daily, July 19)

I read Li's article "Made in China" with great interest. I am a South
African living in London who happens to be Chinese. I am also a mum, an
optometrist and company director.

While growing up in South Africa, "Made in China" always stimulated great
pride and excitement among the Chinese folk without regard to quality or
hard labor associations. Anything to do with China was considered an
achievement as the small community of Chinese there did their utmost to
instill a sense of pride in their young and retain the key tenets of
their cultural heritage. According to my parents, Chinese never divorced
and every single one was strictly heterosexual!

Needless to say in a country dominated by non-Chinese, not only did we
youngsters feel like we were the oddest looking lot in the world, we were
desperate to belong and a large majority of us ended up completely
rebelling and a casualty of our inability to speak Chinese fluently. So
we have a group of Afrikaans, English and occasionally Zulu or
Xhosa-speaking Chinese South Africans who know more about rugby and
barbecues than they do about the yuan.

But life goes in circles and now I have seen some of the world I realize
that while I am everything South African, my interest in China has
perhaps finally come home albeit via a rather circuitous route.

Vanessa Ho-Yan (Chan Siu May)

Authors like Sara Bongiorni will continue to be endorsed, just because of
the Western world's fear that "China will take over".

Little do they understand about China or the Chinese. It is just strange
to them. Nor is the Western world interested to really know about China,
and that is the problem.

The Western businessmen traveling there - myself being one of them - have
mixed feelings.

They are at the discretion of Chinese complexity. Looking through a
"Western" pair of glasses does not help.

Parker getting used to married life

(AP)
Updated: 2007-07-18 11:31

On behalf of Callaway Golf Foundation in partnership with the
Entertainment Industry Foundation,
Eva Longoria will appear in a PSA campaign to raise awareness of ovarian
cancer. [Business Wire]

With all the hardware Tony Parker has racked up over the past several
years playing for the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs, it's the latest
addition to his collection?-- his wedding ring?-- that's on his mind.

Parker, just back from a honeymoon with actress-wife Eva Longoria, said
the band will take some getting used to.

"It's weird, it's weird," Parker said Tuesday night. "I don't wear rings.
... The only ring that I was wearing is our championship rings, but you
only wear that maybe two times, three times maybe. So I have to get used
to it."

Parker, 25, and Longoria, 32, married in a civil ceremony July 6 in
Paris. The next day, a priest married them in a church across from the
Louvre Museum, followed by an exclusive bash at a storied French chateau.

Parker said it was only on his recent honeymoon that he was able to
reflect on what has been a banner year. Parker won his third championship
with the Spurs, was named MVP of the finals and then exchanged vows with
"Desperate Housewives" star Longoria.

"I can't complain. I feel very blessed. It was an unbelievable year for
me and for the team. And it was just great. It's hard for me to put (in)
words and explain," said Parker, who was at a premiere party for a DVD
chronicling the Spurs' run to their fourth championship in nine seasons.

"When I was on the honeymoon I finally sat down and tried to realize what
we accomplished, and me personally. But it's still hard. I just think I'm
going to realize that later on. When you look at your career, I'm going
to say, 'Man, 2007, it was a great year,'" Parker added.

Parker said Longoria?-- in a silk wool and silk gazar scoop-back mermaid
gown embroidered with silver metallic designed by Angel Sanchez?-- looked
"amazing" and "beautiful" on their wedding day and that the event was
unbelievable.

Besides his ring, Parker is also getting accustomed to the ever-present
paparazzi.

"It's not like Brad Pitt, or Britney Spears. It's not that bad. And when
we're in San Antonio it's OK," he said. "It's more for Eva, it's not me.
I'm just there holding hands, they take pictures. It's her world."

And as for his ring, Parker said he'll do his best to keep track of it
before and after games.

"A lot of my teammates told me they lost it like five or six times,"
Parker said. "So I'm going to try to lose it only one or two times."

Peter Andre criticises Kate Moss

Updated: 2007-07-17 11:06

Peter Andre has criticised supermodel Kate Moss for sending out an
irresponsible message to youngsters.

The singer and reality TV star accused Moss of being far too skinny, and
claimed that young women should not look up to her.

"She is meant to inspire young girls, but how can a walking skeleton
inspire anyone?" Peter remarked. "Considering she's a supermodel she
looks more like Kate Fungus than Kate Moss. Her body actually looks like
it's eating itself."

'Potter' works magic in $77.4M debut

LOS ANGELES - Harry Potter remains a box-office charmer.

The Warner Bros. fantasy sequel "Harry Potter and the Order of the
Phoenix" conjured up a $77.4 million debut to lead the weekend box
office, according to studio estimates Sunday.

That raised the movie's total domestic gross to $140 million since
opening Wednesday.

"Order of the Phoenix" also has taken in an additional $190.3 million in
44 other countries where it began rolling out Wednesday.

"Transformers," the DreamWorks-Paramount sci-fi tale that was the
previous weekend's No. 1 movie, slipped to second place with $36 million,
lifting its total to $223 million.

The weekend's other new wide release, grisly horror story "Captivity"
from Lionsgate and After Dark Films, opened out of the top 10 with $1.55
million, coming in at No. 12. The movie stars Elisha Cuthbert as a model
who is abducted and tortured.

"Order of the Phoenix" expanded overall business for Hollywood. The top
12 movies took in $171.1 million, up 14 percent from the same weekend
last year, when "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" was No. 1
with $62.3 million.

The fifth chapter in the movie series based on J.K. Rowling's novels
about the teen wizard, "Order of the Phoenix" has Harry (Daniel
Radcliffe) leading a secret society of students to prepare for the coming
showdown with the evil Lord Voldemort.

The previous four "Harry Potter" flicks all had bigger first weekends,
ranging from $88.4 million to $102.7 million, but those all debuted
Friday. "Order of the Phoenix" was the first to get a jump on the weekend
with a Wednesday opening.

"We're in the middle of summer, and we just said why not, because kids
are out of school," said Dan Fellman, head of distribution for Warner
Bros. "It certainly turned out to be the right decision."

"Order of the Phoenix" did more business in five days than each of the
first three "Harry Potter" movies did in their first full week, and it
nearly matched the $146 million first week total of the fourth film,
"Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," Fellman said.

Warner Bros. counts on the "Harry Potter" frenzy to persist with the
publication next Saturday of the final book in the series, "Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows."

"People are going to have Potter mania happening again when the book
comes out," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker
Media By Numbers. "They'll be walking book in hand into the movie
theater."

In limited release, Focus Features' film biography "Talk to Me" opened
strongly with $390,754 in 33 theaters. The film stars Don Cheadle as an
ex-con who becomes an outspoken social commentator on the radio in the
1960s.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian
theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be
released Monday.

1. "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," $77.4 million.

2. "Transformers," $36 million.

3. "Ratatouille," $18 million.

4. "Live Free or Die Hard," $10.9 million.

5. "License to Wed," $7.4 million.

6. "1408," $5.01 million.

7. "Evan Almighty," $5 million.

8. "Knocked Up," $3.7 million.

9. "Sicko," $2.65 million.

10. "Ocean's Thirteen," $1.9 million.

Britney Spears

Pop superstar Britney Spears has placed her Beverly Hills mansion on the
market again--and this time the luxury property comes fully furnished.

The singer first put her Tuscan Villa-style home on the market in
February, just three months after she bought it, for $7.2 million.

Spears, who also has a property in nearby Malibu, decided against selling
the house in April, following a month in rehab.

Now the six-bedroom property, which comes complete with a media room and
maids' quarters, is being offered for $7.5 million--and the pop superstar
is offering up her furniture as an added incentive.

At one club

(That's Shanghai)
Updated: 2007-07-11 09:37

This location changes names as frequently as other bars change wait staff.

When it opened as Xanadu in 2004, the luxurious and glitzy design
attracted a local crowd. A year later, it was overhauled and re-emerged
as MOS Club. The demise of MOS club gave birth to Face to Face: different
name, same look. So, imagine our total lack of surprise when we happened
upon a poster advertising the grand opening of @ one club. We visited one
Thursday night to investigate, and found the design is unchanged, though
the pair of risque salsa dancers is new.

But as we wordlessly sipped our Cold Brazils (rum, triple sec and lemon
juice, RMB 35), we couldn't help but wonder if the novelty floor show
will be enough to help @ one club escape the fate of its predecessors.

To the moon and back

By Chen Nan (Beijing Weekend)
Updated: 2007-07-10 09:42 The Temple of the Moon has undergone a major
facelift and reopened to the public two months ago with its original
grandeur restored. Tourists can enjoy visiting four major imperial
temples in Beijing - the temples venerating the heaven, the earth, the
sun and the moon - where emperors worshipped nature on various sacred
days.

The four temples were built in locations demarking the four cardinal
directions, forming a square that surrounds and protects the Forbidden

The Temple of the Moon has undergone a major facelift and reopened to the
public two months ago with its original grandeur restored. Tourists can
enjoy visiting four major imperial temples in Beijing - the temples
venerating the heaven, the earth, the sun and the moon - where emperors
worshipped nature on various sacred days.

The four temples were built in locations demarking the four cardinal
directions, forming a square that surrounds and protects the Forbidden
City. They are now public parks.

Temple of Moon(Yuetan)

Built in 1530, the roughly 8-hectare Temple of Moon, or Yuetan Park, to
the west of the imperial city was the site of imperial sacrifices to the
moon.

In the past decades, bushes and fruit trees have been planted here. In
1969, a 180-meter-tall television-broadcasting tower was erected in the
park, taking up about one-eighth of its total space, according to Wang
Jun, an official with the Xicheng District Gardening Bureau.

During the restoration project, many damaged parts were rebuilt,
including the walls of the altar, the square white marble sacrificial
platform, the sacrificial routes through the park and many ancient
dwellings. The Beijing municipal government and the Xicheng District
government jointly earmarked 190 million yuan ($23 million) for the
renovation project, which also called for relocating the broadcasting
tower and upgrading the park's environment. Four institutes and 178
households near the altar are also being relocated to make way for the
altar wall and expanded greenery.

Opening hours: 6am-9pm
Location: 6 Yuetan Beijie, Xicheng District. Buses to get there: 15, 19,
823.
Tel: 6802-0940.

Temple of Earth(Ditan)

The Temple of Earth, or Ditan Park, near the North Second Ring Road, is
where emperors prayed to the earth for favorable weather and national
prosperity. Built during the Ming Dynasty in 1530, it is the only
existing place to worship the earth.

According to ancient Chinese belief, heaven is round, while earth is
square. So, the Temple of Earth's construction included many square
altars and walls.

This magnificent temple consists of five main buildings arranged on the
north-south axis, with annexed halls flanking both sides. The Chinese
government has listed the temple among the most important historical
monuments under special preservation.

The surrounding areas have become an open space for people to engage in
leisurely activities. Since the late 1980s, traditional temple fairs have
been held here regularly during the Chinese lunar new year.

Opening hours: 6am-9pm
Location: A2 Di'anmenwai, Chaoyang District. Buses to get there: 13, 27,
104, 108, 116, or take the subway to get off at Yonghegong to go north.
Tel: 6421-4657.

Temple of Sun(Ritan)

The Temple of Sun, or Ritan Park, in eastern Beijing, is located near the
Jianguomen area and adjacent embassy district. It is a short walk from
the Yong'anli subway station on the Line 1. The altar was built in 1530
as a place for emperors to make ritual sacrifices to the sun. The park
has been undergoing slow but steady renovation and upgrading since it
opened to the public 50 years ago.

It features expansive gardens and a small lake. A mural wall, the park's
main scenic attraction now, was a piece of artwork created about 20 years
ago to draw more sightseers. The tiled mural depicts sacrificial
ceremonies for the sun in emulation of what was done on these grounds by
Ming and Qing emperors. The park is also known for its blossoming lotuses.

Opening hours: 6am-9pm
Location: 6 Ritan Beilu, Chaoyang District. Buses to get there: 1, 4, 28,
43, 57, 120.
Tel: 8563-5038.
