Thank you everybody. After months of searching, this past week has been most fruitfull. The good
people of this forum have given me some usefull suggestions, and I now see a bit of light at the
end of the proverbial tunnel. I even got an E-mail back, from the consulate in Chengdu. All in one
week. Amazing!
My God! Life is so weird sometimes. I got nothing for months, then it all comes flooding in on the
same week. I've never felt more alive. Ha Ha! I should be in Chengdu by the fall. (autumn) And if
anybody on this forum that lives in Chengdu wants a skiing lesson, I'll give ya' one free. Meet me
at the Xiling ski area. We'll crank out a few runs and then go sip a tall frosty one.
Thanks, nitropuppy.

Thanks, Annajustin. A very usefull link. Chock full of info.

The Chinese Scholarship Council has, and maintains, I believe, a site that has some useful
information, including Chengdu schools.

Hey!

I read you study at the SWJTU in Chengdu. Next month, I'll fly to China to study Chinese at that
university for one year. I've already been searching a lot of information, and I can't wait to be
there, but maybe you have an answer to my question: when does the school year end at the SWJTU? I
would be very glad if you knew an answer to this question and with any kind of information you
still have.

Thanks a lot!

Lientje

You misread the questions and answers. I was the one planning on some schooling in Chengdu. So
far, I'm still in the planning stage. But, my guess would be, .... early june. Most schools go
September to June. The final day depends on your curriculum. Finals vary from school to school and
year to year, as far as the certain date is concerned. Ask the particular school.
Best of luck, John

Yes, if you want to get married in Chengdu, it should not be a problem. First, get yourself an
apartment, maybe 1500 yuan per month furnished, 6 month minimum usually, one month's rent to the
agent, plus a large deposit. Then go down to the local police station (the apartment guards will
tell you where) and register it as your address. You can do all that on a tourist L visa.

Go off and get married at the Marriage Office. I've been there and talked with a guy from America
doing just that. Next step was the American Consulate for his wife's USA visa. You will need
documents to 'prove' you are not already married, ie something from your state saying they have no
record of you being married. I'm not sure you need to have a residence permit, and even if you
don't, a temporary residence permit issued by the hotel might suffice.

Once you are married or can claim some sort of 'family' relationship, you can have a shot at
getting a family L visa. You might need to buy an apartment to do that, you might not. It depends
on the PSB. As with everything in China, it helps to have connections.

Buying an apartment could be a problem for a foreigner in Chengdu. 'Gloria Apartments', a new
block just on the market in Chengdu, turned me down as a buyer because I am a foreigner. But I
have an apartment in my own name in a neighbouring town (much cheaper than Chengdu - Chengdu price
is now about 5000 RMB/sqm - but Deyang price is 1700 or less, and in smaller cities you might pay
under 1000). So there are local rules for this as for everything else in China.

The advantage of the family L visa (different from the tourist L visa) is that it is multiple
entry and lasts for one year at a time. It's better than the 3-month (or 6-month) tourist L visa
(unless you actually like to take a trip to Shenzhen-HongKong or Zhuhai-Macau every three months
or so). After 5 years of marriage you can get something even more permanent.

Hi, lien,

autumn semester: september--january
spring semester: february--june(or early july)

now SWJTU has two main campuses, the old one is Chengdu campus, for graduate school, and the
apartment of overseas students that you can apply one but also optional as you can rent one nearby
off campus; the new campus in the countryside of the city but not far at all.

you may contact this: http://www.swjtu.edu.cn/english/inter.htm

good luck!

Actually buying an apartment in China is not that dificult. There are two ways to buy an apartment
in China.

Chinese citizen:

You can pay cash or if you wanrt a morgage you must pay a 30% (Required, use to be 20%)
downpayment and then pay off the balence in a morgage through China Bank, Construction bank or any
bank of your choice.

Non-citizen:

You must pay 100% if you are not a Chinese citizen.

Caution:

Usually the apartment you are buying is under construction and it could be a long time before you
can move in. Typically they are unfinished inside and you have to hire a contractor to finish the
interior. There have been cases of developers going bankrupt leaving the buyers with no apartment
and not much recorse (This is rare but has happened) Its better to buy an apartment from an
existing apartment owner who wants to sell his apartment for whatever reason. I would recoment
buying an apartment no older then 5 years. Find one that is close to the subways and shoping
centers.

China is like other countries and there is both good and bad. I have lived and worked in China for
many years in different Chinese cities and do not speak Chinese. In spite of that I love China and
the very friendly people. Nowadays many cChinese people speak English, especialy business people.
And then there are the Irish Pubs. I think there is an Irish Pub in every Chinese city. Thank God
for the Irish.

Jerry

bring my gear (shoes, harness) to china?

daiow -

Wow! Glad to find this thread. I'm possibly coming to Beijing and was wondering what I'd do for
staying in shape. I've seen the posts for the "Extreme experiences" bouldering/bar, and an address
for the Capital Gymnasium, which claims to have a wall. I'm a big fan of the "full-service"
climbing gyms in the San Francisco area (home) and wonder if anyone knows of something like this
in Beijing....machines, spinning, yoga, climbing routes, etc. Thanks!
Dai

tadhunt -

Folks,

I'm in Beijing for work through at least September 10, and am looking to get out climbing.

I've been to Extreme Experience once so far (this past Wednesday evening), and met one cool
climber... But the gym was empty except for him, me, and the bartenders.

I'm heading over there around 14:30 today with him again, feel free to join us! We were going to
head out to Ritan park for the climbing wall, but it is raining :-(

Anyway, I'm from the San Francisco bay area in California, and do quite a bit of outdoor climbing.
I would like to head out to one of the local areas on the weekend. I brought my rope and
quickdraws, I just need partners.

Ciao,
-Tad

Hi

I'm here for a few weeks and have my shoes and harness. Can I join anyone going climbing please?
I'm learning Chinese but am still just a beginner so really don't have the vocab or confidence to
rock up to a wall, make friends and convince someone to belay me...

I promise I'm an affable chap..

Hey Maxou.

Extreme experience is open and at the Pingod centre. There is also a climbing wall at Peking
University that I can definitely find.

The others are all listed in this thread I think. I'm not great but can belay. We'd need a rope is
all. I have my harness and shoes.

You can talk to me at adam.dutton@zoo.ox.ac.uk.

Hello everybody !

I'm French and I just arrived in Beijing! I read your messages, did one of you suceeded in
creating a climbing group or something like that?
In Paris, I used to rock climb in the Foret de Fontainebleau (for those you may know the place)
and I climbed also in Bourgogne with rope.
I would definitely enjoy to join a climbing group as I already miss climbing...
Do not hesitate to contact me at julie_chen_ye@hotmail.com

Hi,

I just moved to Beijing and I am living in the northeast suburb.
I am really a beginner and have little experience but I'd really like to climb. I have harnet and

I'am also looking for other activities so if you are forming groups of hikers to escape from the
coty in the week-end please get in contact with me.

All the best,
GS

what if most of the solders want to be a general?

Recently, in an argument about the “Super Girls” coin money overnight, some defend for the
“Super Girls” by quoting some authentic classics that there is nothing wrong to coin money
overnight. Of course, to coin money overnight lawful doesn’t violate the law, but I think no one
is too foolish to say that it is guilty to coin money overnight.

What is really guilty is not to coin money overnight, but those who make it to become the social
value. This the key point! No one will criticize Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, or gossip about Ka
Shing Lee’s experience of getting rich. Why? Their experiences all can be studied and referred
how to get rich with wisdom and hard work. How about the “Super Girls”? Besides their singing
skills, the competition itself is full of commercial operation, artificially bidding for votes and
even depressing dissidents. “I wish I could imitate the “Super girls” and get my popularity
in this singing show.” This what the biggest “enlightenment” for us Chinese, especially for
our youth in the “Super Girls’” “super show”.

  当然,“超女”引发的问题,只是当代经济大环境下青少年价值观畸形
变的一个突出案例。而事实上,在20多年的市场经济改革过程中,我们在正
确的人生观、价值观教育方面的失落已经到了让人触目惊心的地步。
Of course, what problem the “Super Girls” trigger out is just one outstanding case for our
youth’s values become abnormal under the contemporary economic environment. In fact, the
education concerned with the values on world and life has been degraded to a startling extent in
the twenties-year market economy reform.

I once published an article named “How to understand the meaning of life” on “China’
Youth” (a newspaper) on about the New Year’s Day in 1993, due to the troubles caused by “the
vacuum in values ”. In those days, it caused a big discussion on “Ding Yue’s Phenomenon”
for more than a month. 13 years passed so far. Recently, a big survey done by Liaoning Province
Social Scientific Union and Liaoning Province Youth Study Organization, shows that “… among
those between 10 ~ 20 year old, the most popular careers are boss and businessman (19%), next to
the governmental officials or civil servants (17%). Others, like movie stars, pup stars,
professionals, are hot choices. Common laborers are given cold shoulders, and only 3% of them are
will to be a common laborers.”

  看罢调查结果,笔者不禁感叹,如今的小年轻真是“雄心壮志冲云天”
,都想出人头地,高人一等,都不想做普通劳动者。然而,这正常么?这
象是喜是忧?答案是不言而喻的。
After reading the survey results, I sighed, “Nowadays, the young guys are really extremely
ambitious. All of them want to stand out and stand and to be superior to everyone else, without
being a common laborer any more. However, is it natural? Is it should be glad or sad? The answer
is self-evident.

It is quite clear that the youth’s cognition on values today (the samples between the age from
10 to 20 are very typical) has been far beyond my worrying about “the absence of morality” or
“the vacuum in values ”, but have been distorted nakedly, i.e. “the parasitical group to
their parent ” living shamelessly, common laborers being nobody’s business, boss, official,
pup star being crazily purchase! If so, I would like to ask, who will sweep streets, who will
teach students in schools, who will cure patents, who will drive a car… and who take up all
these jobs that common laborers “will” do?

  而事实上,绝大多数青少年将来做的,都是这些普通劳动者的“差事”
如此,梦想与现实的巨大落差,他们将以何种方式填平?
Of course, most of the youth will have to take up these common laborers’ jobs. Therefore, there
is a deep fall between dream and reality, in what way can they fill the fall up?

In the humor actor Zhao Benshan’s stage-skit, a village head argues who is the most beautiful
with Ms. Fan wrapped in silk and stains and walked in a cat-walk style. He said, “Ms. Fan, I
think the most beautiful are common laborers.” After his words, the spectators acclaim loudly.
But now, reading the survey by Liaoning Province Youth Study Organization, I just can’t squeeze
a smile., Who will respect singers in bars, if everyone pursues to be a “Super Girl”? Who is
willing to be “the most beautiful” common laborer, if everyone thinks only “cat-walkers”
deserve to be glorified?

不是不可以做梦,但不要文革时代的那种大拔哄,一窝蜂,不问贤愚,不论

No, miss! It means that those skilled, responsible and talented common labors in every walk of

Or one should not think about making progress and rising in the society?

Absolutely! But should teenagers and young adults narrow their choices and all jam in one

I still don't understand.

If there is a demand for certain skilled labour (say for antiques restoration) and there is not
enough supply, surely the remuneration for those skilled labour will rise and thus attract young
people, no matter if they are interested or talented in that field, to work on that area. And if
there is proper nurturing at the schools then the situation would be even better. But I think it
is unreasonable to expect people to work without proper pay.

If a lot of young people want to join the entertainment industry because they like the lifestyle
and think it is easy to succeed, I don't see why they should not do so or be condemned. A lot of
people wanting the same thing means that the competition would be keen and thus would drive away
those who perform less well (they would get less opportunities, earn less, be less famous or not
famous at all), who would eventually have to turn to other fields that they are good at (or they
may choose to remain there and rot, who knows) and become, perhaps, common labourers.

I think it is a matter of demand, supply and competition. And it is good when people have the
aspiration to improve and to move upwards in the society. It doesn't matter if a lot of them will
fail because they will learn from their failure.

I don't think there is a problem with those Chinese directors who want to win an Oscar award, as
long as this gives them a drive to make good films.

Michelangelo, from what I've read, considered himself a sculptor and did not really care much
about painting. I think this was his 自我定位. And if the vatican did not hire/force him to
paint those ceilings, we wouldn't have that painting in the sistine chapel today. (well this may
not be relevant or even true but it has just come up in my mind.)

I don't think life is as simple as this. For us the common people to know the existence of "good
films", they first need to be recognized as "good films" by some authority. What if you are a good
director but do not care a damn about those authorities (ie. their standards & practices)? How do
people know that you exist??

Is it reasonable to see young people (specially young girls) get jammed in “Super Girl’s

Cultural Revolution, right? In the Great Cultural Revolution, all young guys were so crazy about
the “political” affairs and wandering around to practice all kind of “cultural
revolutions”. Therefore, our country was lake of all kinds of talented young people in each
business in a very long period after that terrible political disaster. In those days, not matter
how much money you had, you would find it hard to look for a good teacher, a good doctor, a good
nurse, a good civil engineer and so on. Why? All those should have been a good teacher, a good
doctor, a good nurse, a good civil engineer haven’t done, for they wasted their prime time in
those “revolutionary days革命岁月”. So China’s development is left almost 50 years
behind the world. Aren’t the lessons in the Great Cultural Revolution painful enough for all
Chinese people to remember?

Quote:

If a lot of young people want to join the entertainment industry because they like the lifestyle
and think it is easy to succeed, I don't see why they should not do so or be condemned. A lot of
people wanting the same thing means that the competition would be keen and thus would drive away
those who perform less well (they would get less opportunities, earn less, be less famous or not
famous at all), who would eventually have to turn to other fields that they are good at (or they
may choose to remain there and rot, who knows) and become, perhaps, common labourers.

That’s just the every thing we should let those teenagers and young adults understand!

Quote:

I think it is a matter of demand, supply and competition. And it is good when people have the
inspiration to improve and to move upwards in a society. It doesn't matter if a lot of them will
fail because they will learn from their failure.

I am sorry miss, but I just wonder how many people nowadays have taken the lessons from the Great
Cultural Revolution, though they all mihgt have learned it in history text book.

Quote:

I don't think there is a problem with those Chinese directors who want to win an Oscar award, as
long as this gives them a drive to make good films.

Excuse me, miss, but I just wonder whether the idea, to win an Oscar award, has given them any
drive to make GOOD films, or just make films to please judges’ eyes in
Oscar拍电影去讨好奥斯卡的评委?

Quote:

Michelangelo, from what I've read, considered himself a sculpter and did not really care much
about painting. I think this was his 自我定位. And if the vatican did not hire/force him to
paint those ceilings, we wouldn't have that painting in the sistine chapel today. (well this may
not be relevant or even tru but it has just come up in my mind.)

So you see, one’s achievement has nothing to do with his self-orientation自我定位, but
depends on how well you can do at the end. Helen Keller once thought she was an idiot (her
self-orientation in those days?) in the world in her childhood, because she could not see, hear or
speak in those days. But surely you know how great she finally became, right?

Thanks!

I don't think it is appropriate to compare a talent competition with the cultural revolution. And
I don't think "making good films" is identical with "pleasing the jury of a film award".

And, studentyoung, you don't need to address me (it is me I suppose) as "Miss".

Wie geht's, Michael? How are you?

Thanks for the links.

You should have mentioned that there are links Chinese characters (汉字 / 漢字 (Hànzì)) as
well (on a Chinese language forum!). Do you have Chinese - English transalations? I am comfortable
using German but other users might not be. "Kanji" (漢字 / かんじ) (you probably know) is
used in English when talking about the Japanese characters.

mkengel -

Hello.
>>You should have mentioned that there are links Chinese characters (汉字 / 漢字 (Hànzì)) as
well (on a Chinese language forum!).

On my page there is only very few material for Chinese language learning but I link to HanDeDict
which I introduced here:
http://www. /showthread.php?t=10118
and here
http://www. /links/...wdetails&l=167

But we are here in the "Other cultures and language" section, so here only the Kanji announcement.

>>Do you have Chinese - English transalations? I am comfortable using German but other users might
not be.
No, we are only preparing materials for German-speaking people.

>>"Kanji" (漢字 / かんじ) (you probably know) is used in English when talking about the
Japanese characters.
After 13 years living in Japan, I think I know. Did I make somewhere a writing mistake ? Please
tell me where. Thank you.

Michael

atitarev -

No, sorry, Michael, I didn't mean to upset you. That's why I said "you probably know".

mkengel -

No problem.

A little bit off-topic now, but to answer one of your comments.

We take our German translations for the vocabulary cards directly from HanDeDict. But
unfortunately we have a different vocabulary base compared to CEDICT and we do not store the
English equivalent, so it is not possible to make Chinese-English translations.

We always recommend to printout our German cards without the German translations. On the blanc
backside you can write your own translations (English, French, Russian, etc)

Michael

atitarev -

Thanks, Michael, your site will be useful for all Chinese and Japanese learners, whatever their
first language is. There are similar sites in English to yours, though.

It's usually referred to in English as PHS or Personal Handyphone System, which is the name of the
system and has the virtue of being ugly, rather than silly like the other version, 'Little Smart',
which is the translation of the xiaolingtong brand name.

Edit: Having said that, I'd probably prefer to just use the pinyin, unless you are referring to
the generic technology. And is there a less clumsy term for that the Personal Handyphone System?
Personal Access System is also used, but doesn't seem much better.

HashiriKata -

Thanks Roddy, you're very quick!

I've also just now found this from Wikipedia:

Quote:

Xiaolingtong (小灵通) is the Chinese brand name for the PAS mobile network system. Unlike
"true" mobile networks like GSM, Xiaolingtong acts as the wireless extension for the wired
telephone system in China, also known as wireless local loop. The phone's range is limited to the
local calling region, which is usually a single metropolitan area.

Learn Chinese online - Band of gypsies

CITYLIFE / Weekend & Holiday

Band of gypsies

By Adam Skuse (That's Shanghai)
Updated: 2007-07-06 09:35

Gypsy jazz, made famous by legendary guitarist Django Reinhardt in the
smoke-filled clubs of 1930s Paris, has journeyed east to Shanghai's
French Concession. The enthusiastic messengers of this sound, San
Franciscan Doug Martin and French guitarist Etienne Jeanne, hold court at
HFZ Gourmet and Lounge and La Bella Caf on Thursday and Friday nights,
respectively, before an audience of foot-tapping and head-nodding fans.

The phrase 'Gypsy jazz' may not be immediately recognizable to many
people, but its sound is. Played almost exclusively on stringed
instruments, it's an up-tempo, lively sound with its roots in traditional
Romany folk music. While a guitar lays down the driving rhythm of
fast-changing triads, an intricate melody is played over the top, usually
by another guitar or violin.

Gypsy jazz aficionado Doug Martin speaks of the wide appeal of the genre:
"The style lends itself wonderfully to musicians and non-musicians. It's
got a feel that anybody can get into; yet it's also complex so even
musicians of a high caliber can find it truly stimulating and expressive."

Jeanne agrees that a big part of the music's appeal is the esprit de
corps the music engenders. "There's a great connection between the
musicians and the audience, especially as the city has a historic
connection with jazz."

Indeed, the pair are often joined by guest musicians to play blistering
versions of standards such as "I Got Rhythm", Reinhardt classics like
"Djangology" and their own compositions. Erhu player Yao Minfei has also
joined them on stage, bringing a distinctive Chinese flavor to the mix.

"I believe the melodies of Chinese folk music lend themselves very well
to Gypsy music," says Martin. "After all, Gypsies have no borders and
many Gypsies or nomadic people traveled east and west, so this music we
label as 'Gypsy' has roots everywhere, not in one place."

Stop pollution

Grandpa Chen Hui

My grandfather, Chen Hui (George Chen), accomplished a lot in his life.
When I was informed of his passing away, I was heartbroken.

His warm hugs always made me feel calm and relaxed, and he was always
patient with me. I could not, and cannot, accept the fact that he is not
here to give that wonderful hug to me again. He has been such a wondrous,
inspiring grandfather.

He used to be an interpreter for the very famous Mao Zedong and was also
a journalist/managing editor for the China Daily.

Chen Hui knew many people. Isaac Stern, a greatly loved violinist who
made a film called From Mao to Mozart, signed and wrote a message in one

I will follow in my grandfather's footsteps, for one of my long-term
goals is to become a journalist.

Chinese Studies - China likely to cancel "Golden Week" holidays in 2009

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

China likely to cancel "Golden Week" holidays in 2009

(Xinhua)
Updated: 2007-07-02 10:35

The Chinese government is likely to scrap up its "golden week" holiday
system and make public holidays of more traditional festivals by 2009, a
Chinese tourism expert has revealed.

The week-long May Day holiday would be shortened to one day and the
National Day holiday to two days, Zhang Hui, dean of the tourism
administration department at Beijing International Studies University,
told a forum in Xiamen, southeastern China's Fujian province.

Zhang said the conclusion was drawn from discussions among domestic
tourism experts.

To make up for the lost holidays, experts suggested choosing three
traditional festivals as public holidays, according to a story published
in the China Youth Daily.

"Experts all agree that Mid-Autumn Day should be set as a public holiday
and the government can choose two more from the Lantern Festival, the
Tomb-Sweeping Day, the Dragon-Boat Festival and Double Nine Day." Zhang
was quoted as saying.

In addition, compulsory paid vacations, which might be written into the
labor law, would be granted to employees, he said.

Each person will have a basic seven-day paid leave a year, increasing by
one day for every year of employment. The longest paid leave would not
exceed 14 days, he explained.

China has three "golden weeks" for the Spring Festival, May Day and
National Day holidays. The "golden weeks" are actually only three days
holiday as a weekend on one side of the holiday is designated as two
working days.

The Lunar New Year golden week would be preserved, Zhang said.

Learning Mandarin - All-time greatest HK film heroes

CITYLIFE / Hip & New

All-time greatest HK film heroes

(beijing weekend)
Updated: 2007-06-29 10:08

In the Mood for Love

Wong Kar-Wai returns with his most accessible work yet. Chow Mo-Wan (Tony
Leung Chiu-Wai) and his wife move into their apartment on the same day
that Mrs. Chan (Maggie Cheung) and her husband move into the apartment
next door. At first their relationship consists of passing pleasantries
and mundane mahjong games with the neighbors but soon a sneaking
suspicion bubbles its way to the surface. The increasing absence of their
respective spouses arrives at the same time that Chow sees his wife
carrying the same handbag as Mrs. Chan. Mrs. Chan, in turn, notices that
her husband sports a tie similar to that worn by Chow. The two begin a
clandestine friendship, and soon discover their desire turning from
revenge to genuine passion.

Wong's movies are about love, but are not necessarily love stories. The
exquisite detail in which we witness the growing passion and passing
frustrations of the would-be adulterers gives Wong ample chances to weave
his signature cinematic magic. Everything from the music, to the glorious
cinematography, to the sublime performances echoes the longing and inner
emotion felt by the two protagonists.

Tony Leung Chiu Wai won the Best Actor Award at Cannes Film Festival in
2000.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Academy award-winning film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is more than
just a movie; it's a phenomenon. The Ang Lee film has had a tremendous
impact on the Asian movies that are financed and distributed to American
audiences.

The disappearance of a magical jade sword spurs a breathtaking quest for
the missing treasure. Li (Chow Yun-Fat) is embittered by the loss of his
jade sword, and his unrequited pursuit of Yu (Michelle Yeoh) is further
complicated by the mysterious intrusion of a murderer. The identity of
the assassin is gradually unveiled as a beautiful, well-to-do noble who
is more than what she seems to be (Zhang Ziyi).

Shaolin Soccer

After a two-year break, Stephen Chow finally returned to Hong Kong
screens with Shaolin Soccer. Chow stars as Sing, a Shaolin disciple famed
for his "Mighty Steel Leg". He's inspired to start a soccer team composed
of Shaolin martial artists after he meets Fung (Ng Man-Tat). Fung was
once a brilliant soccer player called "Golden Leg Fung", but he became
crippled after throwing a match some 20 years ago. His rival Hung
(Patrick Tse) was the cause of Fung's injury, and now leads an
intimidating soccer team with the unsubtle moniker "Evil Team". Fung's
goal is to meet his old rival on the playing field, but first they have
to get a team together.

Easily his most ambitious film, it combined the usual Chow nonsense
comedy with a sports storyline and special effects. The result: the
biggest local moneymaker in Hong Kong history, and a critically-lauded
effort which took home the 2002 Hong Kong Film Awards for Best Picture,
Director, Actor and a bunch of others.

Infernal Affairs

Top-notch commercial filmmaking starring more big names than any Hong
Kong film probably deserves. Directed by Andrew Lau, Alan Mak, this
cops-and-robbers thriller is about a pair of detectives leading
undercover lives. Yan (Tony Leung) has lived deep inside organized crime
for 10 years, while Ming (Andy Lau, not to be confused with the director)
is a highly placed, corrupt internal affairs officer. This intricate and
well-told story of loyalty and betrayal has been the stuff of other Hong
Kong crime melodramas.

At over HK$55 million ($7 million), the film has gone on to become the
territory's second highest-grossing local film behind Shaolin Soccer when
it was released. It has won the Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor
and three other awards at the 2003 Hong Kong Film Awards.

Perhaps Love

Hong Kong director Peter Chan continues his quest for love in Perhaps
Love - a Chinese-language, Broadway style musical film. The story itself
is simple. With its backdrop in present-day Shanghai, a female film star
Sun Na (Zhou Xun) runs into her ex-lover, Lin Jiandong (Takeshi
Kaneshiro), also a famous actor on a movie set in a circus troupe. But,
the actress is now together with the director Nie Wen (Jacky Cheung). Lin
harbors mixed love and hatred for Sun, and plots to take revenge to her
for ten years of waiting after she left him to chase her dream of being a
star. The three characters struggling in the circus troupe movie happened
to suffer the same triangle in real life.

Director Peter Chan invites Bollywood choreographer and dancer Farah Khan
to design the Broadway-style dance numbers set in Old Shanghai. Zhou Xun
has won the Best Actress award for her acting in this film at the 25th
Hong Kong Film Awards in 2006.

Transformers still big on small screen

(E! Online)
Updated: 2007-06-27 16:00

Los Angeles - Optimus Prime is in his, er, its prime.

Already set to appear in the big-budget Transformers movie, the good
robot and his Autobot friends have lined up their latest TV series.

Transformers Animated will debut next year on the Cartoon Network, the
network and the toy giant Hasbro jointly announced Monday.

In addition to the Autobots, the dastardly Decepticons are also on board.

Transformers Animated will be the ninth series to feature the
Hasbro-hatched characters since 1984. The most recent edition,
Transformers: Cybertron, debuted on Cartoon Network in 2005.

The initial plan for the new show calls for 26 half-hour animated
episodes, plus a 90-minute special. The order will add to the more than
350 episodes that already comprise the Transformers' TV library.

Although the news comes just a week before the scheduled opening of
Paramount and DreamWorks' Transformers, the new TV show is not a tie-in
to the live-action film. (Indeed, Cartoon Network is affiliated with
Paramount and DreamWorks studio rival, Warner Bros.)

"The lore carries on, and everything is linked," Hasbro exec Samantha
Lomow said Monday of the Transformers universe. "But this is independent
of the movie."

Because no Transformers event would be complete without new Transformers
collectibles, Hasbro promises there will be goodies (toys, games, etc.)
launched in conjunction with Transformers Animated.

Transformers, the movie, is set to blast its way into theaters in
sneak-peak late-night showings on July 2. Michael Bay directs; Shia
LaBeouf stars; the Autobots and Decepticons, as always, make Earth their
battleground.

When asked if the TV series announcement was made Monday in order to lock
up Optimus Prime, et al, before the forthcoming movie boosts their asking
prices, Lomow laughed: "Yeah, that'd be funny," she said.

Never underestimate a shape-shifter called Optimus Prime.

Chinese Class - Tom Sizemore gets 16-month sentence

Tom Sizemore gets 16-month sentence

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-26 08:34

LOS ANGELES - Tom Sizemore was sentenced Monday to 16 months in state
prison by a judge who ruled the alleged discovery of methamphetamine in
the actor's car had violated his probation in a previous drug case.

Sizemore "has been in every program, and here he is again," Superior
Court Judge Cynthia Rayvis said.

He "abused the privilege of probation" and "needs to be in a lockdown
setting," the judge said.

Rayvis recommended Sizemore be sent to the R.J. Donovan Correctional
Facility in San Diego County because of its noteworthy drug treatment
program.

Sizemore, whose screen credits include "Saving Private Ryan" and "Black
Hawk Down," didn't speak during the hearing. He wore orange jail clothing.

Authorities arrested the 45-year-old actor in Bakersfield on May 8.

Sizemore's lawyer, Fay Arfa, argued that prison wouldn't help her client
overcome his problem.

She said Sizemore had "literally fallen from stardom, sitting in a jail
cell by himself" and wants to recover.

After the ruling, Arfa said Sizemore's legal team "will pursue our
remedies on appeal."

Martin Sheen, who starred on TV's "The West Wing," attended the hearing
in support of Sizemore.

"I don't think prison is appropriate for anyone who is in the grip of
drug and alcohol abuse," he said outside court. Even so, Sheen said
Sizemore could be successful in a prison drug rehab program.

Sizemore was arrested last month with another suspect. In court papers,
Deputy District Attorney Sean Carney alleged that Sizemore violated his
probation by being under the influence of methamphetamine, opiates and
marijuana, possessing methamphetamine and possessing drug paraphernalia.

Sizemore faces up to six years in prison if convicted of all the charges.
He has been in jail without bail since June 5, when he surrendered on a
warrant alleging he had violated his probation.

The actor was due back in court Tuesday for a hearing on whether he will
be credited for time he's spent in live-in drug rehabilitation.

Sizemore was convicted in 2003 of domestic violence involving his
ex-girlfriend, former Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss. He remained free
pending an appeal.

In October 2004, he pleaded guilty to a felony count of possession of a
controlled substance identified as methamphetamine and was placed on
probation. The probation was revoked in 2005 when Sizemore was caught
using a prosthetic device during a drug test.

His probation was later reinstated, but he tested positive for drug use
last year and was given another three years' probation, authorities said.

Learn Chinese - This motoring mania is driving us all crazy

This motoring mania is driving us all crazy

By Patrick Whiteley (China Daily)
Updated: 2007-06-22 09:38

In the year 3 BC (Before China), I was a motoring writer working in
Sydney. After joining China Daily last year, a colleague suggested we
begin a Test Drive column. My 30-something friend was eager to learn
about the nuts and bolts of motor journalism and was just like a boy who
was given his first bicycle. He knew more about the brands, makes and
models than I did. He certainly could talk the torque.

After I passed my Chinese drivers' license test, we organize our first
test drive car - a little Ford Focus - but on the taxi ride to the
pick-up address, he made a startling confession.

"Patrick, just a little thing you must know. I can't really drive."

After a long pause, I summed up the situation.

"Mei wenti (No problem)."

I have always believed that if the details get in the way of a good idea,
you should run them over.

"Minor detail," I reassured him.

My cheerful friend had been licensed for five years, but had rarely
driven on the roads.

However his lack of hands-on experience had never hampered his teen-like
passion about the shiny new machines. My friend doesn't have pictures of
Gong Li or Zhang Ziyi on his walls, he has glossy images of the BMW X5
4.6L or the VW Touareg.

My buddy is no Robinson Crusoe. His four-wheel fascination is shared by
millions of my new neighbors of Beijing, a city in which 1,000 new cars
are added to the roads each day.

China's automobile industry made a $10 billion profit last year, up 46
percent from the previous year, and the car is a serious status symbol.

The "you-are-what-you-drive" philosophy is taking hold and the flashier
the car, the better. The prices can be astronomical.

The new Audi Q7 costs about 1.3 million yuan ($171,000), which can also
buy a very nice two-bedroom apartment in any big city. The same 257kW,
440Nm 4.2-litre direct-injection petrol V8 sells for $98,000 (751,000
yuan) in Australia.

Luxury-car import taxes and the rising yuan have driven up luxury vehicle
prices to almost double of what they are in the West. Dealers also
capitalize on exclusivity, and bump prices up even further.

If these luxury cars are forbidden fruit, then most people want a bite.

I've just finished test-driving the Audi Q7 and it is one sweet ride,
however the attention it received in the China Daily car park was as if
the circus had come to town. Children stopped playing, women swooned and
men marveled at this sleek machine.

After a little chuckle, I put China's motoring obsession into
perspective. In Sydney, a very nice two-bedroom apartment with a view
costs about $500,000. So if a guy parks his $510,000 Maserati in my
street, I would stop and stare and so would my neighbors. But would I be
awestruck by an Audi?

It's all relative. Curiosities attracting my fascination - doorways in
hutong and old men practicing taichi in the park - are old hat for
Chinese. I must look a bit silly as I stop, swoon and marvel at the
treasures.

To me, they are all new and shiny. It's just like the circus has come to
town.

Chinese Mandarin - It's all change for serial clothes swapper Britney

It's all change for serial clothes swapper Britney

(dailymail)
Updated: 2007-06-19 10:38

Amazingly multimillionaire singer Britney Spears seems to be running low
in the clothes department - so much so that on a night out, when she got
fed-up with her own outfit she bagged her friends!

The night started well enough, with the party-loving mother-of-two
stepping out for dinner at popular Hollywood restaurant Lola's in a
demure strapless black dress, and her unnamed friend wearing a babydoll
style lace top over black hotpants.

their respective outfits

After: Feeling a bit overdressed, Britney swaps clothes with her friend,
squeezing herself into the babydoll style top and shorts

But in the middle of the party the group was attending, it seems Britney
took a liking to her friend's outfit and when the pair emerged from club,
Winstone, they had swapped.

Last year, the singer swapped clothes with some scantily-clad dancers
while on a visit to burlesque club House of Blues, prior to the downward
spiral that saw her enter a rehabilitation treatment centre after she
shaved her head.

A tale of two outfits: Britney's clothes swapping antics are the latest
way for her to generate headlines for her fast-fading pop career

The clothes swapping seems to be the troubled singer's latest way of
generating headlines as she fights to save her once-thriving career.

Yesterday she was accused of causing chaos outside celebrity hotspot the
Casa Del Mar hotel, Los Angeles, in an attempt to be seen by waiting
photographers.

Paparazzi were assembled to snap Britney's one-time pop rival, actress
Mandy Moore - who was conducting press interviews inside.

A source told newswire Wenn: "She drove really slowly and doubled back on
herself to make sure that everyone who wanted to get a shot, got a shot."

But things got ugly when her bodyguard had to fight off a snapper who got
too close to his charge.

Britney is said to have made a run for it - only to end up hanging out by
the hotel pool - in full view of everyone.

Moss restricts Doherty interview

Kate Moss has reportedly restricted Pete Doherty's forthcoming television
interview on The Jonathan Ross Show.

Moss has apparently given Doherty a categorical list of what he can and
can't say on the show.

The former Libertines frontman has appeared on the programme once before
and he spoke frankly about his relationship with the supermodel, saying:
I love her bones, I always will.

According to Entertainmentwise Moss has given her boyfriend strict rules
not to talk about their upcoming wedding or his drug addiction. He is to
focus on his music instead of his personal life.

Los Angeles sheriff ordered to explain Hilton release

triggered an outcry and allegations of "celebrity justice."[AFP]

Los Angeles sheriffs were on Tuesday ordered to explain why Paris Hilton
was released from jail last week, an event that triggered an outcry and
allegations of "celebrity justice."

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted to request the
explanation at a weekly meeting amid ongoing claims that the hotel
heiress had received preferential treatment from the sheriff's department.

Hilton, who was ordered back to jail by a Los Angeles judge on Friday,
was freed from her 45-day day jail sentence for undisclosed medical
reasons last week after serving only three days behind bars.

However, her release angered civil rights activists and public officials,
who said Hilton could have been treated for any medical condition at a
prison hospital facility.

Veteran activist Al Sharpton said Hilton had been granted an early
release because she was white and wealthy, and questioned whether a
rapper would have been allowed to go home early.

Los Angeles Sheriff Lee Baca has denied accusations of favoritism, saying
Hilton had been treated more severely by the courts because of her
celebrity.

He said other people would have been unlikely to serve any prison time
because of the early release program. City attorneys have disputed Baca's
claims.

Meanwhile Hilton, who remains in a medical unit at the Twin Towers jail
in Los Angeles, received a visit from her parents Rick and Kathy on
Tuesday, who were forced to push through a scrum of media camped outside
the facility.

"It is what it is, you know," Kathy Hilton told reporters after the
visit. "She wants to just do her time and get on."

Hilton is scheduled to be released on June 26, assuming time off for good
behavior. She was sent to jail after a court ruled she had violated the
terms of her probation for a drink-driving offence by twice getting
behind the wheel while her license was suspended.

The New York Post reported Tuesday that Hilton's parents were planning a
huge "get out of jail" party for their daughter when she is released.

The newspaper said that Rick Hilton, had asked a string of Las Vegas
clubs to stump up cash, flights and hotel rooms for the honor of hosting
the bash.

"He was originally asking for a 50,000-dollar cash fee to be paid, as
well as accommodations and flights," the Post quoted its unnamed source
as saying.

Jennifer Aniston may soon be part of Posh and Becks' A-List gang

(ANI)

London - It seems that actress Jennifer Aniston will be a regular visitor
to the Beckhams' place, once they shift to their LA mansion.

According to reports, Posh reportedly knows the Essex builder who is
currently romancing the former Friends actress.

Posh met the former construction worker turned model when he dated her
all-time pal Maria Louise Featherstone back in the days when they all
lived in Essex.

Paul is still good friends with Maria and recently met the make-up artist
for dinner in LA.

And he reportedly confessed to Maria that there was a new lady love in
his life, but didn't disclose the name.

"Maria Louise and Paul were the genuine article for two years. His
modelling career meant he was going all over the world and Maria Louise
was busy with her job doing make up on big films and for Victoria. They
split up on really good terms and remain friends. They still have a lot
of shared pals," The Sun quoted a source, as saying.

"The last time Maria Louise was over she went for dinner with Paul and
they had a great laugh. He was coy about his new woman and she couldn't
believe her eyes when she found out it was Jennifer," the source added.

Meanwhile Posh has already chalked up a few A-list pals, including
Jennifer Lopez, Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise.
